Pakistan selects SIAP+MICROS to strengthen its weather early warning systems

The devastating floods that struck Pakistan in 2022 affected more than 33 million people, making them one of the country’s worst humanitarian disasters in recent history. In response, the government launched a series of initiatives to improve forecasting capabilities and enhance preparedness for extreme weather events. Among them is the Integrated Flood Resilience and Adaptation Project (IFRAP), supported by World Bank funding.

As part of this programme, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has awarded SIAP+MICROS the contract to supply, install and commission 60 Automatic Weather Stations together with new agrometeorological monitoring systems. The contract was awarded following an international tender in which the Italian company outperformed leading competitors, including Campbell Scientific and MicroStep.

The new monitoring network includes:

  • Automatic weather stations equipped with state-of-the-art sensors.
  • Solar-powered systems with 7–10 days of autonomous operation.
  • Dual lightning protection for both the instruments and the mast.
  • Continuous real-time data transmission, even under severe weather conditions.
  • Certified instrumentation and calibration.
  • On-site training and technical support to ensure long-term operational reliability.
  • Integration with the PMD’s central and regional server infrastructure.
  • A three-year warranty and after-sales support.

The accuracy, continuity and reliability of the collected data will strengthen Pakistan’s ability to monitor atmospheric conditions, improve weather forecasting and provide more timely early warnings.

This project follows other recent SIAP+MICROS deployments, including the national meteorological network in Bangladesh and wave monitoring systems across the Indian Ocean, further confirming the company’s ability to compete successfully in international markets. This global outlook has been part of SIAP+MICROS since its foundation in 1925, when collaborations with Europe’s leading manufacturers of precision instruments shaped the company’s international vocation from the very beginning.

The Pakistan project adds another chapter to this long-standing journey. A tangible contribution to improving forecasting capabilities, strengthening early warning systems and providing communities with increasingly reliable tools to address the challenges posed by climate change.
