ISPRA (Italian National Network for the Environmental Protection) has chosen SIAP+MICROS for the design, supply, installation and maintenance of the new National Wave Network consisting of 9 wave buoys that will monitor all the Italian seas. They will be launched off the coast of Ancona and Monopoli (Adriatic), Crotone (Ionian), Mazara del Vallo (Channel of Sicily), Ponza (Tyrrhenian), Alghero (Sea of Sardinia) and La Spezia (Ligurian Sea).
The buoys are designed and built by SIAP+MICROS and are characterized, unlike the products available on the market, by the high level of customization in order to meet the specific needs of ISPRA as a research institute. Specially designed for wave monitoring, the buoys are equipped with state-of-the-art instruments for observing weather-marine parameters, a multi-parametric probe to monitor seasonal variations in temperature and water salinity and a camera. Data transmission is entrusted to an IRIDIUM satellite communication system capable of tracing the buoy’s course even in case of unmooring. Data transmission through the AIS system (automatic tracking system used in the naval sector) is also offered as a redundant communication system. The data acquisition, storage and management system is completely designed and built by SIAP+MICROS to ensure the best performance and telemetry of all the devices on board the buoys. The services at sea will be carried out together with the company PRISMA srl which boasts many years of experience, in addition to the availability of a fleet of boats located in the intervention areas.
This weather-marine monitoring project increases the numerous successful experiences gained by Siap + Micros since the 1950s, including the supply and maintenance of the National Tidal Network for ISPRA itself, the monitoring network of the Municipality’s Tide Center of Venice, the meteo-marine monitoring service of the Tuscany Region and other collaborations with important research institutes such as the JRC of Varese.
